When the Error Message Appears

When running credit reports through TransUnion, you may see an error message at the top of the report stating:

SSN does not match SSN on file - please verify SSN.

This does not always mean that the Social Security Number (SSN) was entered incorrectly in Property Matrix.

Why the Error Message Happens

According to TransUnion, fraud indicators take into account every application the applicant has ever submitted — for any product or service.

This means:

  • If the applicant ever mistyped their SSN in an application, or

  • If someone else entered it incorrectly for them,

then this flag may appear permanently on their report for future checks.

What Fraud Indicators Mean

  • Fraud indicators are red flags to review.

  • They are not used as scoring factors in TransUnion’s recommendations.

  • Their purpose is to alert you to possible discrepancies for further review.
